Team Away Day Facilitator In Manchester

Team away days work best when they are more than a day out of the office.

They need structure, purpose and enough space for people to think properly. They also need someone in the room who can guide the conversation, keep things moving and make sure the day leads somewhere useful.

I design and facilitate team away days, planning days and development sessions for organisations that want to step back, talk honestly and agree what happens next.

I am based in Manchester and work with teams across the UK, including universities, public sector organisations, charities and professional teams.

A team away day should do more than fill a room

A good away day gives people time to pause, reflect and make sense of what is happening.

That might mean looking at what is working well, what needs to change, how people are working together, or what the team needs to focus on over the next few months.

It may also mean having conversations that are difficult to fit into everyday meetings.

The best away days do not need gimmicks or awkward activities. They need careful design, clear facilitation and a good understanding of the people in the room.

When a facilitated away day can help

A facilitated team away day can be useful when:

  • Your team has been through change

  • People are working hard but not always in the same direction

  • You need to refresh your priorities

  • There are tensions that need careful handling

  • New colleagues have joined and the team needs to reconnect

  • You want to review values, behaviours or ways of working

  • You need space for planning, reflection and decision-making

  • You want people to leave with clear actions, not just good intentions

Every team is different, so I do not use a fixed off-the-shelf template. I work with you to understand what you need from the day and then design a session that fits.

What I can help with

I can design and facilitate away days focused on:

  • Team planning and priorities

  • Leadership team development

  • Values and behaviours

  • Service improvement

  • Customer or student experience

  • Team communication

  • Building trust and connection

  • Working through change

  • Action planning

  • Reviewing survey results, feedback or themes

  • Making better use of team meetings

I have facilitated sessions where teams need energy and connection, and sessions where the work is more sensitive and needs a calm, steady approach.

How I approach team away days

My facilitation style is calm, practical and down to earth.

I create enough structure so the day feels purposeful, but not so much that people feel boxed in. I help people contribute, listen to each other and move towards decisions.

I am not there to take over the room or make the day about me. My role is to help the group do the work it needs to do.

That includes:

  • Designing the session around your aims

  • Helping you think through what needs to happen before the day

  • Creating activities that feel useful, not forced

  • Making space for different voices in the room

  • Managing the pace and energy of the day

  • Drawing out themes and practical next steps

  • Helping the group finish with clear actions and ownership

What people leave with

A good away day should leave people with more than flipchart notes.

Depending on the purpose of the session, your team may leave with:

Clearer priorities

  • A shared understanding of what matters now

  • Agreed actions and owners

  • A better sense of how the team works together

  • Practical ideas for improving communication

  • More honest discussion about what is getting in the way

  • Renewed focus and momentum

  • A clearer connection between values and everyday behaviour

Where useful, I can also provide a short written summary after the session, capturing key themes, agreed actions and next steps.

Who I work with

I work with organisations that want facilitation to feel useful, human and grounded in real work.

This includes universities, public sector organisations, charities, professional services teams and leadership groups.

I have worked with organisations including the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Liverpool, Greater Manchester Police, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The University Caterers Organisation.

My background in learning and organisational development means I understand how teams work, how organisations change and how important it is for people to feel heard in the process.

Manchester based, working across the UK

I am based in Manchester and regularly work with organisations across Greater Manchester and the wider North West.

I can also travel across the UK for in-person away days and facilitate online sessions where that works better for the team.

In-person sessions are often best for full team away days, especially when the aim is to build connection, work through complex issues or spend proper time planning together.

Example away day themes

Your away day might focus on one clear question, such as:

  • What do we need to prioritise over the next six months?

  • How do we want to work together as a team?

  • What does great service look like for us?

  • How do we bring our values to life in everyday behaviour?

  • What have we learned from recent feedback?

  • What do we need to stop, start or continue?

  • How do we make sure every voice is heard?

  • How do we move from discussion to action?

  • The exact shape of the day depends on what you need. Some sessions are reflective. Some are more action-focused. Most need a bit of both.

Pricing

As a guide, half-day facilitation starts from £450.

The final cost depends on the length of the session, the level of design needed, travel and any follow-up work required.

I am always happy to have an initial conversation so we can talk through what you need and whether I am the right person to support you.

Frequently asked questions

What does a team away day facilitator do?

A team away day facilitator helps design and guide the session so the day has structure, purpose and useful outcomes. They help the group stay focused, encourage participation and make sure the conversation leads to clear next steps.

Why use an external facilitator for a team away day?

An external facilitator brings independence and focus. It means leaders can take part in the conversation rather than having to manage the room. It can also help people speak more openly, especially when the discussion involves change, team dynamics or sensitive issues.

Do you facilitate team away days in Manchester?

Yes. I am based in Manchester and facilitate team away days, planning days and development sessions across Greater Manchester, the North West and the wider UK.

Can you design the whole away day?

Yes. I can help you shape the purpose, structure, timings, activities and outcomes for the day. I usually start with a conversation to understand what you want the session to achieve, then design something that fits your team.

Do team away days need activities?

They usually need some form of activity, but that does not mean awkward games or forced fun. The best activities help people think, talk and make progress. I design activities that feel relevant to the work and the people in the room

Can you facilitate difficult conversations?

Yes. Some away days involve topics that need careful handling. I bring a calm and balanced approach, helping people speak honestly while keeping the session respectful and constructive.

How long should a team away day be?

It depends on what you want to achieve. A half-day session can work well for focused planning or reflection. A full day gives more space for deeper discussion, team connection and action planning.

Can you provide a summary after the away day?

Yes. Where useful, I can provide a short summary of the main themes, decisions and agreed actions so the day does not get lost once everyone returns to normal work.

“We didn’t just talk. We made real progress”

The session wasn’t just discussion.

We left with clear actions that have made a difference to how we deliver our service.
